Internship Description: Fun Fast Family Food Education Coordinator
The Fun Fast Family Food program is an expansion of The Center Foundationís education programming aimed at promoting positive nutrition practices. The project will educate low-income women, teenage parents, and their children about healthy eating and build nutritional skills to help further lifelong healthy eating habits through interactive workshops, tools and mentoring. The program will also strengthen families by encouraging eating at home, and build community awareness of healthy eating. The Center Foundation is eager to complete a new set of educational materials for its Fun Fast Family Food program, including a 2009 calendar.

Candidate should have knowledge or interest in nutrition and healthy eating and cooking for families and good writing, communication and research skills.

Projects will include compilation and creation of creative educational materials for our Fun Fast Family Food program, a project to educate and encourage healthy food choices for women and teen mothers in our WomenCare® and Young Parents Support Network mentoring programs.

Graphic or publication skills useful for designing a calendar with recipes and other educational information related to nutrition such as encouraging family meals, proper food handling and storage, budget conscious shopping, reading labels, etc.

Technology Intern/Assistant
The Center Foundation often acquires used computers and other equipment and needs someone to undertake testing the hardware on each PC, and installing Windows operating system and our software suite. These can then be given to low-income women and teen parents in our programs. Additional responsibilities could include, depending on ability:

  • Creating basic training materials for new users;
  • Reviewing and updating website information
  • Developing research database tracking systems
  • Developing web-based reporting for mentors and partners
  • Finding other sources for donated computers and other equipment

Public Relations/Development Intern/Volunteer
If you are a born writer, this position is for you! Responsibilities include developing and maintaining press relationships, writing press releases and articles for the newsletter and/or annual report, creating press packets, keeping track of relevant events and research for writing stories for the media, researching corporate or foundation funding sources, and writing inquiry letters and assisting with grant proposals/reports.

Communications Intern/Assistant
Both WomenCare and the Young Parents Support Network are eager to create a compendium of stories from participants as well as a written/emailed vehicle for communicating information to and among the group on a more informal and frequent basis than our newsletter. These positions require good communication skills as well as writing ability. Activities would include:

  • Collecting stories/material/photos from women/girls through interviewing and group meetings, compiling and indexing for each program
  • Encouraging participants to generate material if they want to write it themselves
  • Editing material from participants
  • Production of compendium of stories
  • Gathering other information about relevant area events and services to include in group communications
  • Creating communication system for participants through Yahoo groups or other system
  • Developing and distributing print material to participants
The purpose of the story gathering is to foster a sense of community among the partners/mentees and instill in contributing mentees a sense of pride about having their work printed and shared. We also have a number of girls with an interest in graphic arts, and so expanding the project in that direction is a possibility. This internship would be perfect for someone who is interested in engaging women or teen parents personally and creatively. The group exchange will also help increase resources for participants.
