Research on Women's Commissions and "Friends"
In keeping with The Center Foundation's mission, it has supported research on Women's Commissions, or Commissions on the Status of Women, as they are also called. The Foundation has engaged in several studies, both from a regional and national perspective of these semi-governmental bodies; which were designed to improve the status of women under law and society. These entities, which exist on a state, county and municipal level, were first created in 1963 after the inauguration of the U.S. Women's Bureau by President John F. Kennedy. Most states had such commissions by the mid-1970's. Over the years since then some commissions have become defunct and others created with varying configurations.

The project was focused on identifying Commissions' internal structural characteristics, as well as understanding their political and organizational environment and how they operate, in particular with affiliated "Friends of..." organizations, which are usually non-profit entities. The overall goal of the research is to determine how such organizations should best operate to work together with each other, and with government and the private sector to achieve the mission of real equality for women.
